Guided Orchard Walking Tours by Appointment

School Groups are encouraged to visit the Orchard for an educational tour and lunch starting after Labor Day and running through the end of October weather permitting.

Matthew C Couzens Sr. is the new owner of Crooke Orchards in Ashford, CT.  The orchard has been operating for 40 years on 153 acres.  Matthew Couzens is making some positive changes already including the name, from Crooke Orchards to Horse Listeners Orchard, which is a reminder to his enjoyment of horses.  The orchard is widely known for the over 25 varieties of apples, including the “Miracle Mac”.  In addition to apples, there are many varieties of peaches, blueberries, nectarines, pumpkins and asian pears grown for sale at the on-site Retail Salesroom.

The 2,400 square foot Salesroom is a destination for hundreds of customers daily during the fall season from all over New England.  The Retail Salesroom is open year round, offering unique varieties of local jams, jellies, honey, maple syrup, farm fresh eggs, apple pie, apple crisp, winter squash and Vermont cheese.  A wide array of flowers, annuals and perennials are grown on-site in time for Easter and Mother’s Day.  Many loyal customers travel to the “Quiet Corner of Connecticut” to pick their own fresh apples, taste the premium apple cider, and enjoy the scenic rolling hills.

Horse Listeners Orchard also participates in CT Farmers’ Markets including Ashford and Ellington where he supports FoodShare, WIC clients and senior citizens.  Matthew feels Farmers’ markets are a great way to reach out to communities and provide nutritious regional fruit.

Matthew plans to expand the orchard with more fruit trees, shrubs, and flowers over the next years.  He also plans to add many more family activities where people can enjoy more of the property.  Horse Listeners Orchard is the kind of place where country memories are remembered for mom or dad and the children’s memories are created.

Call the orchard today to schedule a guided tour with your group. Matthew will show children and adults the proper way to pick an apple off the tree. You can also learn how the apples are graded. Enjoy the “Quiet Corner of Connecticut” while you learn the basics about an Apple Orchard operation. “Click” here to go to Things to Do.
